From this moment on, MLB Rants will present our very own Power Rankings every single week, throughout the entire MLB season. Our first ranking is bound to be slightly controversial as we are not basing our picks on preseason expectations, but simply on the numbers as they are per 04.10.19. Everybody knows that Spring Training doesn’t count, so who really is the best team in baseball after nigh on 2 weeks of play?

It’s the Mariners. It just is.

  1. Seattle Mariners
  2. LA Dodgers
  3. Philadelphia Phillies
  4. Tampa Bay Rays
  5. Minnesota Twins
  6. Milwaukee Brewers
  7. Cleveland Indians
  8. Washington Nationals
  9. NY Yankees
  10. STL Cardinals
  11. Houston Astros
  12. NY Mets
  13. LA Angels
  14. ATL Braves
  15. Oakland A’s
  16. SD Padres
  17. Detroit Tigers
  18. Texas Rangers
  19. Arizona Diamondbacks
  20. Baltimore Orioles
  21. Chicago Cubs
  22. Pittsburgh Pirates
  23. Toronto Blue Jays
  24. SF Giants
  25. Cincinnati Reds
  26. Chicago White Sox
  27. Boston Red Sox
  28. Kansas City Royals
  29. Miami Marlins
  30. Colorado Rockies

There are certain choices that stand out, particularly putting the Mariners at number 1 and the reigning world champion Red Sox at 27, but as stated above, our picks simply originate from the numbers as they are right now. We have no doubt that the Red Sox are not a bottom-5 team, but their current record of 3-9 with a -28 differential is absolutely abysmal (worst in franchise history). Likewise, the Mariners will not (most likely) finish the season as the best team in baseball, but you simply can’t ignore an 11-2 record with +40 differential – throw in a .500 record of 2-0 and what you are left with is the undeniable fact that, after almost 2 weeks of play, no one is above the Seattle Mariners. Right now.
